Abu Dhabi — President John Dramani Mahama and United Arab Emirates President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have agreed to strengthen energy cooperation, including proposals for UAE investment in oil and gas storage facilities in Ghana.
The discussions took place on Wednesday on the sidelines of the “Make it in the Emirates 2026” summit at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, acknowledging the UAE’s difficult position as a buffer zone. Both expressed hope for a swift resolution to US-Iran hostilities, saying peace in the region would allow the global community to refocus on sustainable development and innovation.
Beyond fossil fuels, the talks centered on broadening energy partnerships. The leaders explored ways to diversify energy supply, with particular attention to liquefied natural gas and solar power as Ghana looks to reduce dependence on crude oil.
They also reviewed broader bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, renewable energy, innovation, technology and artificial intelligence, with both sides saying there was room to deepen ties for the benefit of their people.
At the close of the meeting, President Mahama and Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Ghana and the UAE. The UAE President described Ghana as a “peaceful partner” and a “secure, stable democracy,” adding that both countries have strong potential for mutual growth.
Both leaders said they were optimistic that the renewed partnership would deliver concrete gains in trade, investment and sustainable energy over the coming years.
