Authorities in Tamale have carried out an enforcement exercise to remove street beggars from key locations within the city’s central business district, as part of efforts to improve public order and sanitation.
The operation, led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive and Mayor of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA), Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, took place on Wednesday, June 24. It was conducted by the Assembly’s security taskforce across areas including the Taxi Rank–Azoka corridor, sections beneath the Tamale Overpass and ceremonial routes leading to the Northern Regional Coordinating Council.

Mr Takoro said the exercise forms part of ongoing measures to restore order, enhance public safety and improve the overall appearance of the metropolis.
He described the growing presence of street beggars along major roads and intersections as a concern, citing risks to both the individuals involved and motorists.
The mayor also noted that the situation had contributed to traffic congestion and undermined efforts to maintain a clean and well-organised urban environment.
As a responsible local authority, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly remains committed to implementing measures that promote law and order while ensuring the sustainable development of our city, he said.
Mr Takoro added that the exercise reflects the Assembly’s determination to address activities that hinder the free movement of pedestrians and vehicles, as well as those that affect Tamale’s image as a developing urban centre.

He commended members of the Assembly’s security taskforce and other stakeholders for their support during the operation.
Residents, traders and transport operators have been urged to comply with the Assembly’s regulations, as officials say enforcement efforts will continue in the interest of public safety and urban development.
The transformation of Tamale is a shared responsibility, Mr Takoro said. Together, we can build a city that reflects the aspirations of its people and serves as a model for urban development in Ghana.
