Nalerigu – The Nayiri, His Royal Majesty Tidugma Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has issued a strong call for the immediate return of Bawku Naba, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, emphasizing that his unlawful detention and the ongoing crisis in Bawku are deeply unjust.
Speaking at a press conference, the Nayiri expressed grave concern over the handling of the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, accusing the state of abuse of power and maltreatment of Mamprusis. He insisted that the continued detention of the Bawku Naba is a major obstacle to peace and reconciliation in the region.
The Nayiri criticized recent developments following the mediation report by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, stating that instead of fostering calm, these actions have heightened mistrust and insecurity. The region continues to witness violence, including killings, arson, abductions, and gunfire.
He alleged a disturbing pattern of arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions, torture, and deaths of Mamprusi persons in state custody since December 2024. Among those mentioned were Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu, Seidu Safianu, and Shamsudeen Mohammed, whose deaths under questionable circumstances have sparked outrage.
Furthermore, the Nayiri accused the government of silencing dissenting voices and denying media platforms the opportunity to present alternative perspectives on the crisis. He also criticized the unequal security measures, noting that travelers from Bawku often go weeks without armed escorts, whereas travelers from Kusasi receive regular protection.
In his appeal, the Nayiri called on the Ghanaian government, the international community, civil society, and human rights organizations to intervene. He demanded a thorough, independent investigation into the alleged abuses and the immediate return of Bawku Naba Sheriga to his rightful place in Bawku.
Lasting peace in Bawku cannot be achieved through coercion, intimidation, or selective justice. The return of the Bawku Naba is essential for restoring legitimacy, harmony, and trust among the people, he stated.
The Nayiri’s plea underscores the urgent need for justice and respect for traditional authority to resolve the protracted crisis in Bawku.
