NPP announces constituency elections, sets 22 June nomination opening date

The opposition New Patriotic Party, NPP, has announced dates for constituency executive elections and released eligibility rules, requiring aspirants to show two years of active party membership and full payment of dues.

In a memo dated 16 June and signed by the General Secretary, the national secretariat said nominations will open on Monday, June 22 and close on Wednesday (24 June), pursuant to Article 7 of the party constitution.

Nominations and filing fees

Nomination forms will be available at constituency offices or from Constituency Elections Committees, CECs. The party set filing fees at GHC1,500 for the Constituency Chairman position, GHC1,000 for 1st and 2nd Vice Chairmen, and GHC500 for all other positions.

Forms can also be downloaded from http://www.newpatrioticparty.org, but aspirants must still pay the required fee to the CEC upon submission.

Eligibility requirements

According to guidelines issued by the party, aspirants must be registered members in the constituency they intend to contest, be in good standing with dues paid in full, reside and vote in the constituency, and demonstrate active party membership for at least two years.

Aspirants for Constituency Secretary, Research Officer and Electoral Affairs Officer must hold at least a Diploma or higher qualification. Members of the CEC are barred from contesting, and anyone who intends to run must be replaced on the committee.

The party said no member shall be disqualified for errors or incomplete forms without first being given an opportunity to correct them.

Committees and timelines

Each region has been directed to submit the list of CEC members to the national secretariat by Thursday, June 18, 2026. The list must include a regional representative, chairmen of the Constituency Council of Elders and Patrons, one elderly woman appointed by the constituency executive, the constituency research and election officer, and IT officers.

Regional parties must inaugurate the various CECs by Sunday (21 June).

Positions and appeals process

Eleven positions are up for contest: Chairman, 1st Vice Chairman, 2nd Vice Chairman, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer, Organiser, Women Organiser, Youth Organiser, Nasara Organiser and Communication Officer.

Each constituency will have an Appeals Committee with one representative appointed by the National Steering Committee as chair, one by the Regional Steering Committee, and one by the Legal Directorate. Petitions must be decided within 48 hours, with a further right of appeal to the National Steering Committee whose decision will be final.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana will conduct the elections under supervision of the CECs in line with the Political Parties Act 2000, Act 574. The party said notice of polls will be made available to constituencies at least four days before voting.
