Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu Abdullai Warns Against Weapons and Drug Use Ahead of Fire Festival

62

The Chief of Lamashegu, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu Abdullai, has cautioned residents and visitors in Tamale against carrying weapons or engaging in drug use during this year’s Fire Festival.

Speaking to journalists in his palace , the traditional ruler urged revellers to celebrate the annual event peacefully, describing it as a significant cultural occasion for the Dagomba people that marks the beginning of a new year.

He encouraged people from across Ghana and beyond to take part in the festivities, which are expected to attract large crowds in the coming days.

However, Alhaji Abdullai warned that the use or possession of weapons such as guns, knives and other dangerous items would not be tolerated.

Anyone who brings such items and causes harm will be held responsible and face severe punishment, he said.

The chief also advised against drug use and other behaviours that could disrupt the peaceful nature of the celebrations, stressing that no excuses would be accepted from those who violate the rules.

He expressed concern about the absence of a dedicated committee to coordinate activities during the festival, noting that poor organisation could lead to challenges, including disturbances caused by vehicles and overcrowding.

The Fire Festival is one of the most prominent traditional events in northern Ghana, drawing visitors each year to witness torchlit processions and cultural displays.

Alhaji Abdullai called for cooperation among community members to ensure a safe and orderly celebration, as authorities prepare for the influx of participants.
