Government breaks ground for phase II of Sentuo refinery expansion

60

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s petroleum industry through strategic investments and policies that promote local refining and industrial growth.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for Phase II of the Sentuo Refinery expansion project, Mr. Jinapor joined President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, as well as industry leaders and other distinguished guests to officially launch the project.

According to the Energy Minister, the expansion will increase the refinery’s processing capacity from 40,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day, a move expected to boost investor confidence, enhance energy security, and strengthen Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

He noted that the project will create employment opportunities, increase local value addition, reduce the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products, and accelerate industrialisation.

Mr. Jinapor further stated that once the Sentuo Refinery and the Tema Oil Refinery are operating at full capacity, Ghana will be able to eliminate the importation of finished petroleum products while positioning itself to supply petroleum products to countries across the sub-region.

He reiterated government’s resolve to implement policies that attract investment, support local refining, and build a competitive and sustainable petroleum industry capable of driving economic growth and shared prosperity.

The Minister also congratulated the founder and management of Sentuo Refinery on what he described as a significant milestone in Ghana’s energy sector development.
