Lamashegu Chief Visits Market, Traders Raise Concerns Over Sanitation and Poor Conditions

The Chief of Lamashegu, Alhaji Iddirisu Mohammed, has paid a courtesy visit to the Lamashegu Market to interact with traders and assess the challenges affecting the market community.

During the visit on May 22, 2026, the chief toured the butchers’ section, where traders raised concerns about the poor state of their working environment. The butchers said they lack adequate support in the slaughtering area, where animals are processed, and complained about weak sanitation arrangements.

According to the traders, they continue to pay various taxes and fees, including charges each time an animal is slaughtered, yet they do not receive proper waste management services from Zoomlion or a suitable place to dispose of waste after use.

Speaking on behalf of the butchers, Nyab Banvim Saha Naa said the butcher shop has not undergone any renovation for several years now. He added that the butchers have had to hire people privately to clean and maintain the area at their own cost.

He appealed to the Tamale Mayor to support the rebuilding or renovation of the butcher shop to improve working conditions for butchers and other traders in the market.

Residents and market women also expressed concern about the deteriorating condition of the market, calling on Members of Parliament and other stakeholders to help renovate the facility and improve sanitation in the area.
