Gushegu, Northern Region, May 29, 2026 – Aspirants seeking election to Electoral Area Committees in the Gushegu Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have accused the constituency’s Elections Committee of deliberately frustrating the nomination process and undermining internal party democracy.
In a press statement issued on Friday, the aspirants, representing all electoral areas within the constituency, alleged that members of the Constituency Elections Committee failed to make nomination forms available within the official nomination period stipulated by the party.
According to the group, party guidelines required aspirants to pick up and submit nomination forms between May 23 and May 25, 2026.
However, they claim that committee members were absent from the constituency throughout the period and were instead engaged in a polling station executives’ data entry exercise in Tamale.
The aspirants further alleged that attempts to draw the committee’s attention to the nomination deadline were met with what they described as dismissive responses, raising concerns about the transparency of the process.
The statement noted that after the committee members returned to Gushegu on May 25, the Constituency Secretary reportedly issued a notice on a constituency WhatsApp platform directing aspirants to download nomination forms from the party’s website or obtain hard copies from the Constituency Research Officer.
However, the aspirants claim that the Research Officer has since refused to distribute the hard-copy forms or accept completed forms downloaded from the official party website.
They argue that the situation has effectively prevented interested candidates from filing their nominations despite the expiration of the official submission deadline.
“As of today, no aspirant in the constituency has been able to access nomination forms from the Elections Committee in Gushegu or submit completed forms,” the statement said.
The aspirants described the developments as a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise potential candidates and manipulate the outcome of the Electoral Area Committee elections before voting takes place.
They have therefore appealed to the national and regional leadership of the NPP to intervene urgently and ensure that all qualified aspirants are given a fair opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
The group specifically called on the party’s General Secretary, National Chairman, and Regional Executives to investigate the allegations, regularise the nomination process, and uphold the principles of transparency and fairness enshrined in the party’s constitution.
The aspirants maintained that their concerns are motivated by a desire to protect the integrity of the party’s internal democratic processes.
“We are loyal soldiers of the NPP, but our loyalty is to the party’s principles,” the statement said. “Our minimum demand remains a free, fair and transparent process as enshrined in the party’s constitution and guidelines.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Constituency Elections Committee and other party officials mentioned in the statement had not publicly responded to the allegations.
