Tamale, June 4, 2026 ~ The Northern Regional Coordinating Council (NRCC), in collaboration with the Forestry Commission, will on Friday, June 5, undertake a regional tree-planting exercise as part of activities marking the Government of Ghana’s 2026 Tree for Life Initiative.

The exercise, which will be led by the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, will begin with a ceremonial tree planting at the premises of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale.

The initiative forms part of a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, restoring degraded landscapes, and encouraging citizens to actively participate in protecting the country’s natural resources.

According to the NRCC, the Tree for Life Initiative reflects the government’s commitment to environmental conservation, climate change mitigation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development.

The programme also seeks to cultivate a culture of tree planting and environmental stewardship among citizens while contributing to efforts to increase Ghana’s forest cover and strengthen ecological resilience.

As part of the campaign, residents across the Northern Region are being encouraged to plant at least one tree in their homes, schools, farms, workplaces, institutions, and communities.

Hon. Ali Adolf John has called on traditional authorities, religious leaders, educational institutions, civil society organisations, youth groups, development partners, and the general public to actively participate in the exercise and support efforts aimed at creating a greener and healthier environment.

To facilitate widespread participation, the Forestry Commission has made available a variety of quality tree seedlings for free distribution. The seedlings can be obtained from the Forestry Commission’s Regional Office in Tamale and its district offices across the Northern Region.

The NRCC and the Forestry Commission have stressed that tree planting remains one of the most effective measures for combating climate change, preventing soil erosion, improving air quality, protecting water bodies, and enhancing biodiversity.

Citizens are therefore being urged not only to plant trees but also to nurture and protect them to ensure their survival and long-term environmental benefits.

The Regional Minister emphasised that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility and urged residents to contribute meaningfully to the success of the initiative.

“Collective action today will help secure a sustainable and resilient environment for future generations,” he noted.

The ceremonial exercise is expected to bring together government officials, heads of departments and agencies, traditional leaders, members of the security services, students, environmental advocates, and the general public in a united effort to promote environmental sustainability and sustainable development in the Northern Region.

The public is therefore being encouraged to participate fully in the 2026 Tree for Life Initiative by planting and nurturing at least one tree as a personal contribution toward building a greener, healthier, and climate-resilient Ghana.
