Underdog Ghana Face Uphill Battle Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

207

Four-time African champions Ghana head into the 2026 FIFA world cup with unusually low expectations, as concerns over form, squad depth and preparation continue to dominate discussions among fans and analysts.

Once regarded as one of Africa’s most formidable sides on the global stage, the Black Stars now find themselves in a period of uncertainty. Recent performances and tournament outcomes have done little to inspire confidence, with memories of disappointing campaigns at the 2014 world cup in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar still fresh in the minds of supporters.

Heading into the tournament, Ghana’s squad appears weakened by injuries to key players and the absence of several notable names who might otherwise have bolstered the team. This has raised questions about the overall quality and depth available to head coach Carlos Queiroz, who is tasked with rebuilding a competitive side under tight time constraints.

Ghana have been drawn into a challenging Group L, where they will face football heavyweights England, experienced European contenders Croatia, and a determined Panama side capable of causing upsets. On paper, it is a group that leaves little margin for error, particularly for a team still searching for cohesion and identity.

Queiroz, known for his tactical discipline and experience on the international stage, has had limited time to fully implement his ideas and philosophy within the squad. That lack of preparation has already shown signs of impact, most recently in Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Wales in a pre-tournament friendly. While the result itself was not disastrous, the performance exposed lingering issues in organization, creativity, and finishing.

For many Ghanaian fans, the combination of these factors recent tournament failures, an unsettled squad, injuries, and limited preparation time has tempered expectations significantly. Unlike previous World Cup cycles where belief and optimism were high, this year’s campaign is being approached with caution and, in some quarters, skepticism.

However, football has always thrived on unpredictability. Ghana’s history at the world cup includes moments of brilliance that defied expectations, most notably their run to the quarterfinals in 2010. It is this legacy, coupled with the pride and resilience often associated with the Black Stars, that offers a glimmer of hope.

If Queiroz can quickly instill tactical discipline and find the right balance within his squad, Ghana may yet prove competitive in a difficult group. Much will depend on how the team responds to early pressure and whether emerging players can rise to the occasion on the sport’s biggest stage.

While the odds may not be in their favor, Ghana’s journey at the 2026 world cup presents an opportunity to rewrite the narrative. For a team entering the tournament as underdogs, even a modest success could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Black Stars.
