Minority Accuses Government of Secretly Allocating World Cup Travel Slots to NDC Supporters

84

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of secretly allocating travel slots to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite President John Dramani Mahama’s assurance that the government would not sponsor fans to attend the tournament.

Speaking at a press conference on June 9, Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu, alleged that NDC Members of Parliament have each been given two slots for people interested in travelling to the World Cup.

He further claimed that District Chief Executives (DCEs) have been directed to distribute three slots in every constituency across the country.

According to Mr. Iddrisu, these alleged allocations contradict the government’s position that it will not sponsor supporters to attend the tournament.

He questioned why the President’s statement appears to differ from actions being taken by officials at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Mr. Iddrisu also expressed concern about the impact of the arrangement on Ghana’s image. He claimed that many Ghanaians have applied for visas to travel to the United States for the tournament, but only a small number have been approved.

He argued that the alleged selection process lacks transparency and creates the impression that opportunities to attend the World Cup are being distributed based on political affiliation.

The Minority says the government must provide clear information on how travel opportunities for the World Cup are being allocated to ensure fairness and transparency.
