President John Dramani Mahama has visited Fuveme in the Volta Region to assess communities devastated by recent tidal waves and discuss both immediate relief efforts and long-term coastal protection strategies with affected residents.

During the engagement, the President highlighted that Fuveme falls under the World Bank-supported West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA), a $150 million initiative targeting coastal erosion and tidal wave impacts across vulnerable West African communities.

He assured residents that the project, currently in the design phase, will soon advance to full implementation. Planned measures include construction of sea defence systems, groynes, and ecosystem restoration efforts such as planting coconut trees and mangroves to stabilize coastlines.

In the short term, the government is pursuing immediate interventions, including dredging of the estuary to reduce water pressure and prevent further damage to homes and infrastructure.

The President’s visit underscores the administration’s commitment to addressing climate-related threats facing coastal communities while leveraging international partnerships for sustainable solutions.
