Tamale, May 7, 2026 — The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, Hon. David Bariche Bukari, has publicly responded to recent allegations by residents of Gbintiri, who accused him and the Regional Minister of denying them a 24-hour economy market.
In an exclusive interview with Radio Tamale, the MCE clarified the municipality’s ongoing development initiatives and reaffirmed his dedication to equitable growth across the region. Hon. Bariche Bukari highlighted that the municipality has benefited from numerous projects funded by the assembly.
He specifically mentioned the lockable stores in Gbintiri, which were initiated under the previous administration but have now been completed under his leadership. The contractor has received full payment, and the project is nearing commissioning, promising immediate benefits for local traders.
The MCE emphasized that development efforts should extend beyond a single community to encompass the entire municipality.
The people of Gbintiri have received several benefits, including the lockable stores, and we remain committed to ensuring fair and balanced development for all, he stated.
He further noted other key projects benefiting Gbintiri, such as the government’s absorption of the Gbintiri Senior High School. In response to community complaints about infrastructure deficits, the assembly provided a three-unit classroom block.
Additionally, inner roads around the market have been constructed to improve accessibility. Looking to the future, Hon. Bariche announced that, in partnership with the African Development Bank, the assembly is working on establishing an agro-processing plant in Gbintiri.
Although the initial land requirement was fifty hectares, the chief allocated thirty-five hectares, and the project remains in the pipeline. He also confirmed plans to develop a modern animal market, underscoring ongoing efforts to boost the local economy.
Regarding the recent protests, the MCE explained that he engaged with the Gbintiri delegation and clarified the benefits still to come. He confirmed that the suspension of revenue collection at the market has been lifted, and traders have resumed operations.
The chief accepted these measures, and issued a formal letter to that effect, he stated.
He explained that the suspension was believed to potentially impact the district assembly’s funds and could undermine confidence in the municipality’s governance.
Hon. Bariche Bukari reaffirmed his positive relationship with the people of Gbintiri and expressed his commitment to continued development for all communities within East Mamprusi Municipality
