A sod-cutting ceremony has been held in Yendi on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to commence the construction of a 24-hour economy market aimed at boosting economic activities in the eastern corridor of Ghana.
The ceremony was led by Alhaji Umar Farouk of the National Democratic Congress as part of efforts to improve trading opportunities and economic growth within the area.
The project has received strong support from community members, party executives, and stakeholders who believe the market will help residents access modern trading facilities without difficulties.
During the event, the leadership of the party paid a courtesy call on Yaa Naa Abukari II to seek his blessings and support for the successful completion of the project. The traditional ruler advised residents and party members to cooperate with one another and avoid acts of disrespect throughout the construction process.
The Northern Regional Minister, Adolf Mburidiba, also participated in the ceremony. He explained that the proposed 24-hour economy market would include several important facilities such as warehouses for traders to store their goods and lodging spaces for travelers and traders who may need accommodation after market hours.
He further warned the public against stealing construction materials or engaging in any acts that could delay the project, stressing that offenders would face the full consequences of the law.
Elders and residents of the community expressed happiness over the initiative, describing it as a long-awaited project that would bring development and improve business activities in the area. They also thanked the contractor and stakeholders for bringing the project to their community.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alhaji Umar Farouk expressed appreciation to the community members and traditional authorities, especially Yaa Naa Abukari II, for their support and cooperation toward the success of the project.
