Tamale, June 16, 2026 – The longstanding water challenges confronting Tamale and surrounding communities could soon become a thing of the past as government intensifies efforts to implement the €312 million Bupe–Tamale–Yendi Water Supply Project.
This assurance emerged during a courtesy call by the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Water Company Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, and his technical team on the Northern Regional Minister, Hon. Ali Adolf John, at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council in Tamale on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Tamale, Hon. Abubakari Adam Takoro; the Municipal Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Hon. Abdulai Imoro Gong; and the Acting Chief Director of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Sumaila Ewuntomah Abudu.
The visit formed part of the CEO’s working tour of the Northern Region to update key stakeholders, including traditional authorities and residents, on progress made toward the implementation of the highly anticipated water project, which is expected to significantly improve access to potable water across the region.
Welcoming the delegation, the Northern Regional Minister expressed appreciation to the GWCL leadership for the visit and reaffirmed the region’s commitment to supporting the successful execution of the project.

Hon. Ali Adolf John noted that resolving the persistent water shortages in Tamale and nearby communities was among the key commitments made by President John Dramani Mahama to the people of Northern Ghana.
According to the Minister, the appointment of Hon. Adam Mutawakilu as CEO of Ghana Water Company Limited reflects government’s determination to deliver on that pledge.
He described the GWCL CEO as an action-oriented leader capable of driving major infrastructure projects and expressed confidence that the Bupe–Tamale–Yendi Water Supply Project would provide a lasting solution to the region’s water challenges.

“The perennial water problem in Tamale is long overdue for resolution, and with the commitment of President John Dramani Mahama’s government and the leadership of Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, this challenge will soon become a thing of the past,” he stated.
Providing details of the project, Hon. Mutawakilu disclosed that the initiative is valued at approximately €312 million, with government having already secured €106 million to commence implementation.
He explained that upon completion, the project will produce about 135,000 cubic metres of water daily, translating into nearly 30 million gallons of water per day for Tamale and adjoining communities.
The GWCL CEO said the project is expected to substantially boost water supply and address increasing demand driven by rapid urbanization and population growth across the Northern Region.
He further assured stakeholders that adequate financing arrangements had been secured to ensure smooth implementation and timely payment of contractors throughout the construction phase.
As part of preparatory activities, Hon. Mutawakilu introduced a team of experts tasked with conducting the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the project.
He explained that the assessment would identify affected persons and properties to facilitate the payment of compensation before construction begins.
According to him, the team will return to Accra to complete the necessary documentation before returning to the Northern Region to commence the assessment exercise, paving the way for full-scale implementation.
He appealed to traditional authorities, local assemblies and residents to cooperate with the assessment team and project implementers to ensure the successful delivery of the project.
The Northern Regional Minister, on behalf of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, traditional leaders and residents of the region, pledged full support for the project and assured the GWCL team of maximum cooperation throughout the implementation period.
Hon. Ali Adolf John emphasized the immense socio-economic importance of the initiative, noting that improved access to safe and reliable water would enhance public health, support economic growth and improve the quality of life of residents across Tamale, Yendi and other beneficiary communities.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from government, the Ghana Water Company Limited, local authorities and traditional leaders to work collaboratively towards delivering a sustainable water supply system capable of transforming livelihoods and accelerating development across the Northern Region.
