Livestock Traders Experience Mixed Fortunes During Eid al-Adha Celebration in Tamale

117

Livestock traders reported slower sales this Eid al-Adha season, as rising prices and economic conditions push many buyers to delay purchases or opt for smaller animals.

According to some traders at the central livestock market in Tamale, sales of cattle, rams and goats decreased significantly compared to last year’s festive season. While demand remained steady, many customers were opting for smaller animals or postponed their purchases due to financial constraints.

A livestock dealer, Ibrahim Sulemana, noted that the market had faced considerable pressure this year.

Last year, people started buying animals weeks before Eid, but this year, many were only inquiring about prices. Feed costs and transportation expenses have increased, which has led us to raise prices, he explained.

Similarly, Alhaji Musah, another livestock dealer, observed that sales this Eid season were slower.

Last year, customers began purchasing animals early, but this year, many are waiting until the last minute because of higher prices and the overall increase in the cost of living, he said.

He attributed the rise in livestock prices to increased transportation costs, animal feed prices and market levies.

A buyer, Abdul Rahman, shared his experience, stating that he had planned to buy a cow for Eid but was discouraged by the high prices.

I came to the market hoping to buy a cow, but the prices were beyond my budget. Last year, I could afford a medium-size cow, but this year, the cost has risen significantly, he said.

Rahman mentioned that he and his family pulled their resources together toward purchasing a single cow, a decision driven by the rising costs of livestock and household expenses.

Amid these challenges, Muslims celebrated the Eid al-Adha sacrifice, underscoring the religious and cultural significance of the festival.
